Philips Satinelle Epilator

Epilating was something I had always wanted to try as I was sick of having to shave pretty much everyday, however I was put off by the extortionate prices. For example, a Braun Silk-Epil 9 will set you back a whopping £120! Ok, it has a lot of amazing features but I only wanted something basic, something that would just remove my leg hairs swiftly, that’s all. I then came across the Philips Satinelle Epilator in my local supermarket, a basic non-fancy epilator that does the job just fine. It was on offer for around £25 and it was exactly what I was looking for at a reasonable price.

The Philips Satinelle Epilator has two speed settings, I haven’t used the higher speed yet but the lower seems to do the job just fine. This epilator isn’t cordless but the cord is long so it’s no problem at all. It can remove hairs as short as 0.5mm and comes in a little pouch with a opti-start cap with massage element and a little cleaning brush to remove any loose hairs after epilating.

Now it does look absolutely terrifying and to say I wasn’t scared is an understatement. I was petrified. It took me a few days to pluck up the courage to go ahead and start epilating, in the end I was actually quite surprised by how it felt. Did it hurt? A little, but nothing compared to how I thought it would. I had seen a few people say they screamed, shouted and swore, I did none of these. I did jump a few times from the shock but overall, it was nothing too major. It is a little odd feeling all these hairs being pulled out, though. Maybe I just have a high pain threshold, who knows?

After I was done epilating, I did notice my legs weren’t as smooth as I wanted them to be. I put this down to it being the first time and that I perhaps didn’t exfoliate enough beforehand. It took about 3 days before I saw any hairs start to grow back which when compared to shaving is amazing. It has now been 10 days and I’m still pretty much leg hair free. If I had gone 10 days without shaving, well, I’d be rather hairy by now. Not a good look. The few hairs that are there now are very fair, softer, thinner and not as noticeable.

The only downside? I did seem to develop a few ingrown hairs, something I never got whilst shaving. Again, probably down to me not exfoliating enough. I’ve learnt my lesson here! If you exfoliate properly, you shouldn’t have any problems.

This epilator by Philips is the perfect epilator for epilating newbies like myself. Nothing fancy, just basic and does the job which is all we need in the beginning. Maybe in the future I’ll splurge on a more expensive one, such as the Wet & Dry ones as epilating in the shower intrigues me! The Philips Satinelle Epilator is currently £40 on the John Lewis website however I recommend looking in your local supermarket (Tesco, preferably) as they may still be on offer!

Have you ever tried epilating? What are your thoughts?

  • I have Epilated several times but never been consistent as I have to pluck up the courage each time. The ingrowing hairs always put me off for a while. Think I will start again and keep up to it this time.
    Thanks for sharing x

  • I've never tried epilating before, but I think I would be terrified like you! It sounds really interesting though, and if I see one on sale I think I'll probably pick it up! Great post x

  • It really wasn't that painful in the end. It's so worth it though, definitely pick one up 🙂 x
