Now that I’ve been blogging for over a year and probably no longer considered a new blogger (although it sometimes still feels like it!) I thought it was about time I shared some tips for new bloggers. Those of you who are thinking of starting up a blog are probably wondering if blogging is right for you. These 5 tips will hopefully help your decision.
1. It’s not easy.
Please do not start a blog if you think it’s going to be an easy ride because it’s not. If you start with those thoughts you’ll end up giving up in a few weeks/months. I didn’t realise how hard it would be but it’s bloody tough and overwhelming at times. Trying to think of post ideas when you’re at a complete blank and spending hours writing and taking photos, it can be stressful but it is fun too, obviously or I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise!
2. Don’t blog for the freebies.
As you’ll probably be waiting a heck of a long time and like I said above, you’ll have given up if that’s all you’re in it for. I have been blogging for a year and one month now and I’m yet to be sent anything. However, I have been lucky enough to have a few brands contact me to put together posts (such as my Achieving Healthy, Glowing Skin post) but these are non sponsored (I wasn’t paid). It’s not about the freebies, I do this as a hobby. Would I like to be sent samples? Of course, who wouldn’t? but that’s not why I write this blog. I like writing, I like photography and I obviously adore beauty, that’s why I blog.
3. Don’t compare to yourself to others.
I’m guilty of this and I’m sure every other blogger is too. I know it’s hard not to but try not to compare yourself with others bloggers because the majority have been blogging a lot longer than you therefore have more experience and knowledge but you’ll get there too, it just takes time.
4. Success won’t come overnight.
I suppose this ties in with number 2 also. Don’t expect to have a huge number of readers and followers overnight and to have PRs & brands emailing you everyday. It takes a lot of work, determination and getting your blog out there. Write interesting posts and promote them on social media, leave relevant comments on your favourite blogs with a link back to your blog (don’t spam!), and even advertise on other blogs. Work hard on your blog and your following and success will build up eventually.
5. Enjoy every moment.
Like I said in the first tip, it’s stressful, hard work and overwhelming at times but make sure you enjoy it too. If you ever have a day where you think ‘I can’t blog anymore’ then think of where it may possibly take you and the benefits of running a blog. You’re learning every day when you write a blog, thats what I love. Writing skills, photography skills and even communication skills if you are in contact with PRs & brands. Blogging can literally lead to anything these days and is now worthy of being included on job applications & CVs. Also seeing fellow bloggers have great success is really motivating. Yes, it will probably take years to match that success or possibly never even happen to you but knowing there is that possibility of becoming really successful is so inspiring and will keep you going but only if you are really enjoying it.
I hope this was helpful to some of you and makes it easier for you to decide on whether or not blogging is for you. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask 🙂
